Is it worth buying? The launch-week scores
Updated 2026-10-18
I pulled OpenCritic and Metacritic on 17 October 2026 and wrote the numbers down with the sample size next to them. A score without a sample is how last week's article ended up quoting a different average.
Aggregates that day
| Source | Figure | Sample |
|---|---|---|
| OpenCritic | 74 top-critic average, 65% recommend | 20 reviews |
| Metacritic | 76, generally favorable. 71% positive, 29% mixed, 0% negative | 14 reviews |
| Steam | Very Positive, 88% | 95 reviews |
| PlayStation Store US | 4.76 / 5 | 185 ratings |
What the written reviews agree on
Praise clusters around the PSP scenario still holding up, the new English skits, and the quality-of-life list. Complaints cluster around sprites that were not redrawn, AI upscaling on movies, no 4:3 option, no old English voices, and the Switch stick. Individual scores I copied from those two aggregator pages: Noisy Pixel 85, PlayStation Universe 80, Gamesurf 80, DualShockers 80, COGconnected 80, Video Chums 75, CGMagazine 75, Push Square 70, PSX Brasil 70, Multiplayer.it 65, Shacknews 50, Gamefa 82.
I am not turning that into a star rating of my own. If $29.99 is the question, the standard edition is the one reviewers are describing. Deluxe is cosmetics and music, priced on the editions page. The original PS1 Metacritic figure people still repeat is 78, and PSP 82, both from Wikipedia's citation of old archives, not from this launch.
Figures on this page were checked against the named sources on 18 October 2026. Store prices move; open the store link before you pay.
